Nancy Schmitt Obituary

Nancy G. Schmitt, 69, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024 with family by her side.  She was born in Geneva, NY to Rosemarie (Cole) and the late James R. Lamphier.  Her early childhood was spent in Warners, NY with her parents and three younger siblings until the death of her father James in 1963 changed the course of her family’s life.  Four years later, her mom married a second time to John L. Martineau, gaining a new Dad and three new brothers.

Nancy’s newly blended family moved to Morrisville, NY, to a small farm with horses, dogs, chickens, ducks and cows. She attended and graduated from Morrisville-Eaton Central School in 1974, where she picked up lifelong friendships, and completed an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration at SUNY Morrisville.  She met her husband, Tom, when he and his parents moved to Morrisville, right next door to Nan’s family home.  Their connection was immediate, and they married three months later.

She worked for Gerritt Smith Infirmary, SUNY Morrisville, Colgate University, Leavenworth Prison in Kansas, and the Earlville Methodist Church in Earlville, NY. The longest, most recent and most satisfying of her employments was with St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, NY, which effectively became a second family and second home to her. She was the embodiment of a welcoming spirit, seamlessly turning new acquaintances into lasting friendships.

Nancy loved life, all things family and friends, past and present, old and new.  She loved gardening, house plants, cooking, cleaning (yep), homemaking – literally the force behind the updating or renovating of three old houses, transforming them into inviting comfortable homes, and was all-in when any of her children were looking for or establishing their homes. She loved family gatherings and social events, and if there wasn’t one in the immediate future, she’d make one happen.  Nancy simply adored her grandchildren and took every opportunity to be with them as frequently as possible.  She was restlessly optimistic and happy; she loved life and it loved her back.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Thomas P. Schmitt, their children and their spouses as well as 16 grandchildren; Rachel and Jeff Knapp, their children Jake, Josh, and Madelyn; Rebecca Hubbard and her children, Layla, Isaac, Eden, and Mea; Joseph Schmitt and Emma Golden and their children, Oren and Adele; Jessica and Stanley Dakosty, Jr. and their children, Stanley III, Nora, and Thomas; Laura Schmitt and Austin Axtell and their newborn Juniper; and finally Leah Schmitt and Chris Brockway and their children, Drew, Elsie, and Cillian.

Also surviving are her mother, Rosemarie Martineau; her siblings, Michael and Ruth Martineau and their family; Christopher and Ellen Lamphier and their family; Steven and Bobbi Jo Martineau and their family; Catherine Lamphier; David and Kristina Martineau and their family; and Andrew Lamphier and his family.  Nancy is also survived by her special lifelong friends, Deborah Radford Moudarres, Brenda Almonte, Susan Chapin, Tara Truett, Debbie Springer, Deb Curtis, April Cascione, and Carolyn Tucker, all of whom supported her and lifted her spirits throughout this difficult illness.  There are innumerable other friends and cousins that would fill pages if all were listed.

Nancy was predeceased by her father, James R. Lamphier in 1963; her stepdad, John L. Martineau in 2016; her parents-in-law, Joseph and Elsie Schmitt; paternal grandmother Ruth Evelyn Lamphier; maternal grandparents, Ira and Anna Cole; son-in-law, Joseph M. Hubbard, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of the family.

Nancy's memorial celebration will be held on March 23, 2024 at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, NY.

Calling hours will begin at 9 am, followed at 10 am with a short service in the church.  Interment will be immediately after the service in the Memorial Garden beside the church.  A reception in the Parish House Community Room will follow.  All are welcome to any or all of the Memorial plans.  It was Nancy’s wish to keep the formalities brief and the celebration perpetual!

Any monetary donations may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 12 ½ Madison St., Hamilton, NY 13346, in Nancy’s honor, with the intention of starting a fund for needed renewal of the kitchen/community room at St. Thomas. We know Nancy would enjoy being a part of one more renovation!
