Andrew “Andy” Waida, age 94, died at the VA hospital on Friday December 7th, 2018. Born in Rochester, NY on June 12, 1924, he was the son of Andrew and Stella Waida.
Andy landed on Omaha Beach on the morning of June 6, 1944 and continued serving in the 61st Medical Battalion in WWII which encompassed campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, and the Rhineland. During these campaigns he was awarded the Purple Heart.
The next 45 years he trained, raced, and bred standard bred horses in Central and Western NY as well as becoming a sought after Blacksmith in the area. For many years Andy filled the fairgrounds’ blacksmith shop with stories, laughter, and free advice to all who ventured in.
In retirement he enjoyed fishing, all things Yankees and laughing with his grandchildren and great grand children. He is predeceased by his parents, brothers (Joe and Mat), sisters (Bernice, Mary, Helen, and Tasha). Andy is survived by his daughters Katherine and Linda (Paul) Palerino; grandchildren Andrea (Sid) Newbold, Alexis (Joe) Bartos, and Michael Palerino; great granddaughters Mia, Abby, Elizabeth and AJ; several nieces, nephews, and sisters and brothers-in-law.
