Katherine Louise Hinton, of Syracuse, died of cancer on January 3, 2020. The daughter of Robert M. and Marjorie (Malone) Hinton, Kathy was born in Rome, New York, in 1949. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Binghamton, she was a teaching assistant in the public schools, a childcare worker, a salesperson, and a literacy tutor. Kathy was appreciated as a teacher for her ability to explain complex ideas in plain language, and as a person for her gentle, kindly, and utterly unpretentious nature. She delighted children because of her playfulness and warmth.
In her middle twenties, Kathy began to hear voices, which became her world. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent the rest of her life trying valiantly to cope with this devastating illness. Her primary support was her mother, Marjorie, a founder of the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Surviving are sisters Diane and Mary Beth Hinton, nieces Sara and Natalie Saiger, and two great-nephews, Ryan and Dylan. Services will be private. Contributions may be made to the local or national NAMI.
