Albert Edward Wright III, "Ted," passed away peacefully at age 81 on January 7, 2026, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, New York, surrounded by his family.
Born in 1944 in Tallahassee, Florida, Ted grew up in a military family before settling in Milford, Connecticut, along the Long Island Sound. There he fell in love with the ocean—swimming, boating, and enjoying fresh seafood—pleasures that stayed with him throughout his life.
Ted earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Syracuse University and began his teaching career at Marcellus High School, where he served for over 30 years as an English teacher and later Chair of the English Department. Deeply committed to service, he led students in volunteering at the Samaritan Center, often staying to help long after others left. After retiring from teaching, he worked at Barnes & Noble on Eric Boulevard.
In 1992, Ted married Susan (Perchan) Wright, and they made their home in Syracuse's Strathmore neighborhood. An avid reader, devoted Boston Red Sox fan, and loyal Syracuse basketball season ticket holder, Ted found joy in life's simple pleasures—coffee, ice cream, the newspaper, and sharing stories with a mischievous smile. He and Susan enjoyed traveling, golfing, and spending winters in Florida. Ted cherished time with his granddaughters. He was also deeply committed to supporting others on their journey to sobriety.
In his final years, Ted faced dementia with quiet strength and the support of his family; a small joke or smile could often bring him back to himself.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred Effie Walker and Albert Edward Wright II, and his brother, Bradford Wright.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Wright; son Albert (Kathryn) Wright IV of Chicago; daughter Meghan (James) Lister of DeWitt, New York; granddaughters Gwen, Maggie, and Zofie; nephews Bradford Wright II and Dylan Wright; niece Caitlin Wright; and sister-in-law Jackie Wright.
A celebration of Ted's life will be held at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church, 5299 Jamesville Road, DeWitt, on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Following the service, a reception will be held at the church.
