Obituary

Audrey Brooks Decker

Nov. 1, 1927 – Aug 29, 2020

Beloved Mother of 4 girls, a beloved daughter, sister and grandmother of 2 girls…Matriarch of an extended family – The Deckers; born and raised in Orient, Long Island, NY.

Audrey was a self-taught artist (painter) who didn’t seriously take up her craft until she was in her 40’s. She first raised a family of 4 girls, and then started a career from scratch; first working part time as a bookkeeper, then went to secretarial work at the Special Ed Dept. of Syracuse University and finally culminated as the Executive Secretary to five plant managers at New Process Gear where she managed many of their charities. She organized the “On My Own Time” Art Show at the NPG plant for many years until she retired and then served as a judge for the On My Own Time program throughout Onondaga County.

Her paintings won many awards. One painting is a rendition of the New Process Gear Plant as it was around 1913 and now hangs in the Onondaga Historical Society. She developed several gallery businesses and ran them successfully: The Great Blue Heron in Brewerton and Limestone Art Gallery in Fayetteville, NY…giving voice and support to the local artists. She taught art classes as well.  She was a former member of the North Syracuse Art Guild and was active with Associated Artists of CNY for over 25 years and a past president of this art guild. Audrey was also a member of the CNY Pen Women and president for 2 years of this organization. For a time, she was on the board of the Burnet Park Zoo (now Rosamond Gifford Zoo) and assisted in fundraising.

She led an interesting life, traveling in the US and whenever she could , she skied in the Rockies and then in the Alps, traveled to Hawaii and took herself on a tour of the United Kingdom while taking a 2 week art course in London. An avid golfer and dancer, she sang in the choir, sang and performed on stage, and competed with her tap dance troupe in NY and New England. She continued tap classes into her 90’s.

She inspired others as she never said “No” to a challenge and if she fell…She got right back up. She was a beloved friend, God Mother and role model for women. Her wisdom, kindness, generosity, sense of humor and creativity will be deeply missed.

Audrey was married and divorced twice and predeceased by her third husband Robert Decker. She  is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Harvey) Ellick, Jessica Taylor, Audrey Piotrowski, Janice (Frank) DeFonda, granddaughters Wendy Tirollo, Elizabeth Morris; Step son: John (Dorothy) Decker; step grandchildren Katherine, Jeanette & Stephen;  Step son: Tom (Susan) Decker; step grandchildren Christine and Robert and 8 step great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
