Ellsworth Walton Obituary

Ellsworth “Al” Walton, 81, died Tuesday January 9, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in 1942 to Howard and Dorothy Walton in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in a tough neighborhood meant learning survival skills and adopting a street smart attitude. At 17, Al enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, acquiring lifetime discipline and ethics that positively changed the trajectory of his life path. His gratitude for the Marines’ core values was lifelong.

Al met the love of his life, Lin, on a blind date in Washington, D.C. They married in September 1965, first residing in Maryland before ultimately settling in Kirkville, New York in 1971. The couple had four children: Lloyd (Kim), Andrew (Jennifer & Amber), Patrick (Dana) and Elizabeth (William) Bryant; eight grandchildren: Daniel, David, Priscilla, Gabriel, Isabella, Spencer, Peyton and Liam.

Al was a Customer Service Agent at Eastern Airlines for 28 years, an employee of Carrier Corps for 10 years, and an agent for TSA before retiring in 2013.

Al’s favorite place to be was at home with his family and dogs: cultivating the land of his expansive property, marveling at deer and planting trees. He was affectionately known for his Brooklyn accent, which added charm and humor to his one-liners. The embodiment of perseverence, Al used mantras that conveyed his outlook on life such as: “No matter what—get up, dress up, and show up ON TIME”; “D.I.N....do it now”; “A smiling face never needs an invitation”; “If you’re going to do a job, do it right”; “Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today”.

Always a gentleman, Al could be found carrying a handkerchief at all times, just in case a lady needed it. He held a strong and personal faith in God, had a generous nature, and genuinely made the world a better place. Al was the quintessential “tough guy” with a heart of gold and we adored him.

A memorial to celebrate Al’s life is planned for May.

The family would like to express thanks and gratitude to the VA Medical Center of Syracuse, including the Home-Based Primary Care team, and Hospice of CNY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kirkville Alive Community Wesleyan Church and Hospice of CNY.
