Gerald M. Gross, 82, of Syracuse passed away on October 18, 2025. Born on January 25, 1943, in Doylestown, PA., he was a graduate of Pennridge High School. He earned a baccalaureate degree from Goshen College and master's degrees from Case-Western University and Syracuse University. He was appointed to The School of Social Work Faculty at Syracuse University in 1968.
Jerry served as Professor and Associate Dean of the School of Social Work for twenty years until his retirement in 1998. Prior to his appointment as Associate Dean, he taught in both the graduate and undergraduate programs of the School of Social Work, served as Director of the School's Baccalaureate Program, initiated the School's International Study Program in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and taught as an adjunct faculty at LeMoyne College. He was an active member of many University and School committees during his tenure at the University. He was a social worker at University Hospitals in Cleveland before coming to Syracuse University.
Mr. Gross presented papers regularly at meetings of professional organizations, and published numerous articles in professional journals. He was a member of the Council on Social Work Education, serving multiple terms on CSWE's Commission on Accreditation, Commission on Educational Planning, Educational Consultation Service, as a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Education for Social Work, and as a chair and member of multiple accreditation site visit teams. He was a charter member of the New York State Social Work Education Association, where he held leadership positions. He was also a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
He was predeceased by his wife Joan E. Gross in 2010. Surviving are his son Jeremy L. Gross and two granddaughters, Mackenzie Autumn Gross and Madison Kaylyn Gross all of Camillus, NY, a sister, Mary Janie Sohar, and five nieces and nephews all of Indiana.
