Guenther Schmid, 88, of Syracuse, NY, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2024 with his daughters by his side. He was born on March 13, 1936 in Mannheim, Germany.
He started working at age 14 as a Hotel Apprentice, then travelled the world working on the Holland America and Swedish American Cruise Lines. Guenther came to America in 1960, where he worked in the restaurant industry in New York City, married and started his family and settled in New Jersey. He then worked as a stockbroker on Wall Street followed by commercial real estate with Weichert Realtors in the 1970’s. He then moved to upstate New York and owned and operated a Beltone Hearing Aid business where he expanded to six branch offices in the north country. He moved to Syracuse where he started the Syracuse Hearing Aid Center and married Nancy Conahan in 1991.
Guenther was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Conahan Schmid in May 2024.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Erica Homer of Brielle, New Jersey and Kim Dombrowski of Chesapeake, Virginia. “Papa” cherished his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jack, James and Nicholas.
Guenther loved to share stories of his experiences with people and places while travelling the world. He was an outstanding cook and shared that passion with his wife Nancy. He really enjoyed the Facetime chats with his granddaughter and always looked forward his daily cocktail hour with friends at his favorite local spots, Guilfoil’s and Wild Will’s.
Family and friends came to say “Cheers” and celebrate Guenther’s life at Guifoils Irish Pub following his passing. His great smile will enlighten the heavens!
