James O. Burgun, 78, a long time resident of Croghan, NY, passed away at the home of his son, Matthew on January 13, 2022 after a long illness. He was born in Florida, the son of Charles and Ina Burgun on August 7, 1943. Jim was united in marriage to Suzanne Christian on February 1, 1964. They had many years of marriage and then divorced. Suzanne passed away June 19, 2013. They had 3 sons from this union.
Jim started his career with the Dewitt Police Department on February 3, 1969. He had many accomplishments. He was a Lieutenant, Supervisor and Firearms Expert. He completed a Breathalyzer course, Photography course as well as a First Aid Leadership/Trainer course. He also participated in the NY State Police Olympics. He was appointed Chief of Police and worked for years until he retired from the police Department.
He then went to work for the GM Inland Fisher Guide Plant. He also had his own gun business for many years. He then retired and moved to his current home in Croghan, where he lived for many years. He enjoyed his cabin in the woods and being off the grid. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hiking, camping and fishing. He is survived by his 3 sons, James (Alicia) Burgun of Manlius, Eric (Candice) Burgun of Minoa and Matthew (Loretta) Burgun of Chittenango. His grandchildren, Alexa, Kayla, Michael, Michele and Courtney; his 3 nieces and his faithful companion Charlie. He was predeceased by his Granddaughter, Ashley and his sisters, Marian and Karen.
There are no services, Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the spring.
