James Jared Obituary

James Gordon Jared, born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on January 25, 1948 to Copeland and Jean Jared, passed away on April 24, 2023, in Syracuse, New York after a long illness. Jim grew up in Cookeville, Tennessee, attending Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ, participating in Boy Scouts and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Jim attended Tennessee Tech before starting his career with Frontier Communications where he became a union representative; a role he was extremely proud to hold. Jim was blessed with one child, Julie, who was his care taken in recent years. Without Julie, Jim would have been lost.

In June of 1984, Jim married Cilla Davis in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Together they bought Shade Tree; their mountain side home in Oxford, New York. There they worked to aid in enlarging the local SPCA of Chenango County; adding cat rooms, a project that brought both of them tremendous joy. Jim enjoyed fishing in the Great Lakes and studied to receive his Captain’s License. Thus began Shade Tree Charters in Fairhaven, New York on Lake Ontario. Jim’s interest in fishing and helping others continued in Fairhaven with the Fairhaven Fishing Association Pen Rearing of salmon and trout, the fishing trips for Wounded Warriors,   local Boy Scout troops, and Exceptional Children of Cayuga County. Only after his health declined and boarding the boat safely became impossible that Jim closed Shade Tree Charters. Jim was a true Southern gentleman at heart; he was just transplanted to New York. Jim was known as the life of the party, was quite the dancer back in the day, had a true love for music of all types especially blues, and was known far and wide for the golf course at Shade Tree. Many have reached out to tell how important Jim was to them, how he helped them in one way or another to get through something. Even though he thought of himself as a curmudgeon, Jim took advantage of his size to be the tough one, but his heart was as large as he was tall. With the passing of each pet, Jim was the one that was crushed, thus the reason for the SPCA No Kill Shelter.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Cilla Davis, and his father, Gordon Copeland Jared. He is survived by his mother Jean, his daughter Julie, his brother Steve (Regina), his grandchildren Malaki (Gabriella), Johanna, Alessandra, and Sophia, his great-granddaughter Stella, his nieces Dr. Wendy Knight (Jim), and Lori Lutton, his nephews Richard Jared (Jennifer), and Gary Jared, and Dr. Michael Murphy, sister in law Pat Murphy (Don), and aunt Wanda Jared, uncle Henry Price, and a host of cousins as well as his fur children, dogs Linnie and Layla, and cats, Sarah, Kit, Binx, Gary, Vic, Louie, and Thelma, and former wife, Joanne Nigolian.

In closing, Jim was the best jokester, so here is one just for him. You can’t spell funeral without the fun. There will be a memorial service at a later date instead of a traditional funeral, no surprise there.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to James G. Jared Go Fund Me care of Southern Bank PO Box 276 Jackson, North Carolina 27846 to offset Jim’s expenses.

Captain Jim has left the dock and said, “don’t worry, or feel sad for me, I’m fishin’ with the master of the sea”.  "There are always new places to go fishing. For any fisherman, there's always a new place, always a new horizon." – Jack Nicklaus
