Jane E. Homa, 80, of East Syracuse, passed away May 3, 2021 at SUNY Upstate Medical University, the night of her 80th birthday. She was born in Syracuse and was a member of St. Matthew’s Church, East Syracuse, NY, but was proud of her Polish heritage and education at Sacred Heart School in Syracuse, NY, and was a member of the Polish Falcons. Jane enjoyed playing cards, reading People Magazine (especially about the Royal Family) and delighted in good food and good conversation for family holidays.
As a young woman, she was an active member of Joe Petta’s Accordion Band, and could play a mean polka. On a whim in the 1980’s, she decided to bike the Erie Canal with her daughter from Dewitt to Rome, NY (a 72 mile round trip) on the hottest day of the summer, with no sunblock, no training and 2 sandwiches for nourishment. She started out working at Stan’s Drycleaners, worked for many years at Agway’s, and finished out her career at St. Joseph’s Home Heathcare Agency, before retiring and volunteering at the American Red Cross. Her family finally convinced her to quit, as she was so dedicated, that she volunteered as many hours as a full-time job. Until recently, she worked the polls every year; she believed in exercising the right to vote. She had many friends at the local Senior Center, where she and her husband John would go for lunch and cards 2 times a week.
She is predeceased by her parents, John and Helen (Dziadula) Medyn, and her beloved son, Patrick, who she is now reunited with in heaven. Jane is survived by her husband of 57 years, John Homa of East Syracuse, their children; Robert Homa of Brooklyn, James (Amy) Homa of Manlius and Maribeth Homa (David Ramsey) of North Syracuse; her grandchildren, (her pride and joy), Katie, Kelly and Makenna; and several grandpuppies, who were spoiled with treats and toys for every occasion. She is also survived by her sisters; Irene (Bob) Dice of LaFayette and Carol Takacs of Camillus and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services are Monday at 8:30 AM in Mathewson-Forani Funeral Home, Inc, 206 Kinne Street, East Syracuse, NY, and 9 AM in St. Matthew's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt.
