Jeanne M. (Capp) Zaricznyj

Jeanne Marilyn Zaricznyj (Capp), passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Saturday, January 14, 2023.   Jeanne had been in the capable and compassionate care of the Loretto system (PACE CNY, Fahey, Bernardine, Cunningham) for five years as numerous chronic conditions required increasing attention and support.

Jeanne was born in Syracuse, New York to parents Samuel and Irene Capp and was raised on the beloved small family farm on Poolsbrook Road in Kirkville, New York.  She graduated from East Syracuse-Minoa High School in 1957 and later worked for Crouse-Hinds Company.  Much later in life, after raising her children and serving as a housewife and mother, Jeanne was employed by Arc of Onondaga and then the Syracuse City School District, serving as a teacher’s aide for students with special needs, a passion for which was dear to her heart.  

Jeanne dedicated much of her adult life to the care of her youngest son Andrew (1969 - 2021).  Andrew was born with cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder the symptoms of which required vigilance and care.  Andrew was born and grew up during a time when institutionalization of children with special needs was the norm.  Instead, Jeanne insisted and fought for a mainstream experience for Andrew, ensuring that he had an opportunity to enjoy the best and most independent life possible. 

Jeanne also had a special affinity for animals.  All things birds and birding became a later passion.  At times she would recall favorite animals (Pinky the cow!  Winston the dog!) more readily than she would people.  Jeanne’s kind soul, generosity, warm smile and genuine interest in others was endearing to many.

In addition to her son Andrew, Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband Orest (1929 - 1984), her brother Daniel Capp (1935 - 2014) and sister-in-law Connie (1938 - 2021). 

Jeanne is survived by daughter Christine (Izzo), son-in-law John, grandson Jack and granddaughter Samantha in San Diego, CA, daughter Melanie (Cifonelli), son-in-law John, grandsons Paul and David in Syracuse, NY, and son Timothy in Bainbridge Island, WA.  

A private family service will be followed by a public reception at Riley’s, 312 Park St. Syracuse NY, 13203 on Friday February 3, 2023 from 6pm until 8pm.  Tribute gifts may be made to The Loretto Foundation, 700 East Brighton Ave, Syracuse NY, 13205.
