Joan Corcoran Stevens Obituary

Joan Corcoran Stevens, age 76, passed away peacefully at Francis House in Syracuse on July 24, 2025, with music in her heart and love all around her.

Born in Corning, NY, to William “Bud” Corcoran and Ruth Kennett Corcoran, Joan’s spark lit every room she entered. She graduated from Corning East High School and SUNY Oswego, where she majored in Mathematics and Computer Science at a time when the field was brand new. It was there that she met Richard Stevens, the man who’d become her partner in love and life. Together they built a 55-year marriage grounded in mutual respect—and an impressive record of Friday date nights with one steadfast rule: no talk about the kids.

Joan’s life was a celebration of connection. She raised three children—Laura, Craig, and Kevin—and doted on her grandchildren Jamie, Logan, Keelin, and Aaron. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend. She shared her voice with several choral groups, her laughter with legions of cousins, and her wisdom with everyone lucky enough to be in her orbit.

She was a fierce problem-solver, undeterred by complexity. A breast cancer survivor, she faced life’s challenges head-on and still found time to explore the corners of the world with her husband Rick, leaving her footprints across Europe, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.

In every note, every journey, and every gathering, Joan created a life symphony whose melody continues in those she loved. She sang in a great many of the harmonies Syracuse has to offer, including the Syracuse University Oratorio Society, Syracuse Pops Chorus, Syracuse Chorale, and Sylvan Beach Singers. She sang until the end—in spirit, if not in voice. Her legacy is composed of harmony, heart, unwavering love, and spreadsheets covering everything from vacations to finances to her own funeral.

She is survived by her husband Rick, their children Laura, Craig, and Kevin, grandchildren Jamie, Logan, Keelin, and Aaron, and her siblings Jerry, Deborah, and Daniel, all of whom cannot help but carry her with them. She was predeceased by her brother David.

Her life was big, bold, and brimming with love, and the ripples she sent forth into the world have benefited all those they touched.
