Leonard Myers Obituary

Leonard Lee Myers, May 22, 1943-August 18, 2024.

Dr. Rev. Leonard Myers, 81, of Baldwinsville, NY passed away on August 18, 2024.  He was born in Marathon, NY to his parents, Merrill Myers and Ruth Bruce Myers Lockwood, who preceded him in death along with his younger brother Edward Myers.  He is survived by his wife of 61 years Shirley Randall Myers, his five children Deborah, Daniel, Joybelle, Timothy, and Victoria, his son-in-law Jim Allen, his beloved grandchildren, Chelsea, Jordan, Justin, Joshua, Micah, Michaela, Aja, and Un-Wuck, his two great-grandchildren, Ruby and Iris, and his brother Douglas.  Dr. Myers held a Bachelor of Arts from Cedarville college, a Master of Divinity from Grace Theological Seminary, a Master of Theology from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary, and a Doctorate of Sacred Theology from St. Paul’s Institute of Biblical Studies. He pastored many churches across the United States, beginning his first full-time ministry at the Grace Brethren Church of Beaverton, Oregon, and leading other congregations in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and several in upstate New York.  He also served as the founding Academic Dean of the Greater Pittsburgh School of the Bible and as an editor at Christian book publisher, Whitaker Books. He was an accomplished orator and author, writing several series of religious education instructional materials for adults for Union Gospel Press and other publishers.  In his retirement years, he published two books, Old Testament Pictures of New Testament Truth, and a memoir entitled, Pastor Gone Bad.  He had a powerful intellect, constantly pursuing philosophical and theological thought, and also became a champion chess player, achieving the rank of candidate master.  He is most remembered, however, for his joyful, passionate, and caring approach to his life, his work, and his family.  His sermons were not arcane theological meanderings, but rather emphasized practical lessons and guidance intended to help his parishioners face life’s many challenges and to build in them a commitment to helping others in world.  He had an unwavering commitment to civil rights, nonviolence, and a particularly strong passion for ameliorating world hunger, especially that of children across the globe.  In lieu of flowers or other memorial gifts, his surviving family members instead request that you consider making a gift to, or sponsoring a child through, Save the Children (www.savethechildren.org), an organization that Pastor Leonard and his family have supported throughout their lives. A private family memorial service will be scheduled in the fall.
