Rev. John J. Heagerty, 96, of Syracuse, passed away August 18, 2023. He was a graduate of North High School and received his Bachelor's degree from St. Bernard's School of Theology and Ministry in Rochester in 1954. He was ordained on February 2, 1954 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Syracuse. He completed his Master's degree from Syracuse University in 1963. He served as an assistant pastor at St. Mary's Church in Skaneateles and Blessed Sacrament Church before joining the faculty at Bishop Ludden High School and serving as Principal from 1963-70.
He then became Pastor at St. Patrick's Church, Chittenango, St. John the Evangelist, Syracuse, St. Paul Catholic Church, Binghamton and St. Matthew's Church, East Syracuse where he served for 21 years before retiring in 1997. After retirement he served Mass for St. Joseph the Worker in Liverpool and St. Mary's Church and St. Anthony's Church both in Cortland. His last ministry was serving the spiritual needs of the all the people living at the Nottingham where he resided for the past 10 plus years. He was also an avid golfer and was a member at Arrowhead Golf Course where he played right up to July of this year.
He is survived by several cousins including, Nancy Hollenbeck O'Neill, Mary Hollenbeck and John J. Heagerty.
Calling hours are Thursday August 24th from 4-7pm at St. Matthew's Church with an Evening Prayer at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday August 25th at 9am in St. Matthew's Church.
Private burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, Oswego.
