Russell E. Wood

Russell E. Wood, 88, of Manlius, NY, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2025. Born to Col. Ernest Charles Wood and Katherine Loren Wood, Russell led a life defined by dedication, service, and passion for innovation.

A proud graduate of Onondaga Valley Academy in 1954, Russell went on to attend Johns Hopkins University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1958. While at Johns Hopkins, he was active in ROTC, which led to his service as a commanding officer of the 13th Ordnance Guided Missile Company in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961.

Following his military service, Russell enjoyed a distinguished 37-year career at Carrier Corporation, retiring as Director of Commercial Engineering. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his pioneering work, holding 18 patents in the HVAC field.

Russell’s interests and talents extended far beyond his professional life. In the 1990s, he served as a Dive Master with the Onondaga County Underwater Recovery Team. He was also a paramedic with the Fayetteville Fire Department.

A man of many hobbies, Russell was an avid bridge player, a passionate RC airplane modeler, and a skilled woodworker. He took great joy in these pursuits, often sharing his talents with family and friends.

Russell is predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Staples Wood, his second wife, Betty Ann Merker Wood, his daughter Susan Ann Parker, and granddaughter Amber Hopkins. He is survived by his sons, Mark and Alan Wood; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as many half-brothers and half-sisters.

A service to honor Russell’s life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Kirkville United Methodist Church, 8317 North Poolsbrook Road Kirkville, NY 13082. Drinks and snacks to follow the service.
